Sights in Cologne
Cologne, the carnival capital of Germany, is not only worth a visit during the carnival season. A large number of museums reflect Cologne’s 2,000-year history from a variety of perspectives. The Kölner Philharmonie is one of the most important concert halls in Europe, and it offers a broad-ranging entertainment programme. Per capita, Cologne has the most bars and restaurants of any city in Germany.
Cologne Cathedral
The
largest Cathedral in Germany is the city’s main landmark and is located
in the centre. The central train station and the largest museums can be
found in the direct vicinity of the cathedral, just like the old town
to the south and the shopping district with Hohe Straße and
Schildergasse to the south-west.
Opening Hours: Mon-Sun 6 am - 7:30 pm, visits may not be conducted during religious services.
Cologne's City Hall
Built around 1330, the city hall can lay claim to a long history. Particularly well known is the "Platz-Jabbeck", a carved wooden gargoyle who opens his mouth and sticks out his tongue when the tower clock strikes the hour. The building was severely damaged during World War II, but it was restored by 1972.
The 4711 house
This
house, steeped in tradition and located on Glockengasse, is the
birthplace and home of the world-famous Eau de Cologne brand 4711 and
presents a lovingly put-together gallery telling the success story of
4711. At the top of every hour the chimes ring out across the city. The
statues display the famous scene of the house receiving its number from
the Army of the French Revolution. Legend has it that a French soldier
painted the number 4711 on this house on Glockengasse.
Museum Ludwig
This museum displays contemporary works of art. Roy Lichtenstein’s "Maybe" and Andy Warhol’s "Brillo Boxes," icons of American Pop Art, belong to the largest collection of Pop Art to be found outside the USA. In addition to this, the third-largest Picasso collection in the world can also be found in Museum Ludwig. Nevertheless, there is also German art from the 70s and 80s, as well as international trends and installations by young avant-garde artists.
Chocolate Museum
Cologne's
Chocolate Museum was foun- ded in 1993 and offers a thrilling insight
into the various aspects of chocolate and cocoa from past to present.
Current developments regarding the production of "chocolate and cocoa"
are also dealt with. An adventure for the whole family.
