Sights in Bremen
The Bremen Ratskeller is located on the market square. It is one of the oldest wine cellars in Germany and also has one of the most extensive wine lists in the country. Just around the corner from the historical town hall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, one can see the sculpture, The Town Musicians of Bremen. Roland, the giant standing in the middle of the market square, is a symbol of the freedom and independence of the old Hanseatic city.
Roland
The largest Roland statue in Germany stands 5.55 metres tall on Bremen's market square and symbolises the autonomy of the city, which has the right to hold markets and have its own jurisdiction. Erected in 1404, Bremen's "Statue of Liberty", together with the town hall, was added to UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 2004. After some restoration works, the head of the statue was replaced with a copy. Today, the original head can be viewed in the Focke Museum.
The Town Hall
The
town hall was built between 1405
and
1410, and 200 years later it received a new façade in the
Weser-Renaissance style, which it still displays to this day.
It is
the only remaining town hall from the late Middle Ages in Europe, so it
was never destroyed. It now belongs to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites
be- cause it remains in its original condition and has never been
altered.
Bremen Ratskeller
The
oldest wine cellar in Germany can look back on over 600 years of
tradition. Top off your visit to Bremen with a plea- sant glass of
wine. There is a selection of around 650 varieties of German wine to
choose from. Or discover the storerooms on a tour of the cellar. In the
former senate room, where guests of honour were once received, you can
enjoy the cuisine of the Michelin-star restaurant,
"L'Orchidée".
The Town Musicians of Bremen
The bronze sculpture, The Town Musicians of Bremen, stands at the western side of the town hall. The origins of this fairy tale, which was written by the Brothers Grimm in the early 19th century, lie as far back as the Middle Ages. The crux of every version of the plot is that the weaker members of a society successfully prevail over the strong by acting in solidarity.
St. Petri Church
This Protestant/Lutheran church with a history spanning more than 1,200 years is the oldest in the city. Still today it is a landmark in the city´s skyline. A platform 86 m high offers views on the marketplace and across Bremen.
